One of the most damaging things you can do is to compare yourself to others. You are unique! You have unique gifts, passions, talents, experiences, and a unique personality. The result is a masterpiece of God’s own making. Therefore the standard by which you compare yourself with should never be to others who are created with a different destiny and purpose.
Don’t Compare Yourself With Others
Can you picture walking through an art museum full of masterpieces painted by different artists and one canvas speaks to the other, “Your colors are not as brilliant as my colors. Your composition is not as good as my composition. You’re not the masterpiece I am.” Again, it’s absurd. Yet we often compare ourselves to others, forgetting God has created each of us as His individual masterpiece to uniquely reflect His glory and give Him honor. It’s not our place to compare ourselves to others. Paul said, “Pay careful attention to your own work, for then you will get the satisfaction of a job well done, and you won’t need to compare yourself to anyone else. For we are each responsible for our own conduct.” (Galatians 6:4-5)
You Are A One Of A Kind Masterpiece
As an artist I understand this all too well. Every time I’ve been to a workshop, the first day everyone is concerned about how they compare to the other artists. There’s always a sense of uneasiness and you hope someone else in the room paints as bad as you think you paint. Usually everyone relaxes after they realize we’re all there to learn, and that the only master artist among us is the one leading the workshop. When we compare ourselves with others, we also try to imitate them and quickly lose the unique touch God has given us. That’s the freedom of being the masterpiece God created you to be. We’re not the artist and it’s not about comparing the canvas of our lives with anyone else’s. God’s painting His one-of-a-kind masterpiece.
