Close The Gap Between Actions And Intentions

close-the-gapIt’s true that we judge others by their actions but we judge ourselves by our intentions. The gap between intentions and actions is the difference between healthy, thriving, growing relationships and those that crash and burn. You can take your relationships to the next level by closing the gap between your intentions and actions. By doing this you will add value to those you have relationship with weather it is business, family or friends.

Here are a few ways you can close the gap between actions and intentions:

Be Present and Be Engaged

Recently in a restaurant, I watched as a couple sat across from each other waiting for their food. While waiting they were both on their smart phones searching and texting, not focusing at all on each other. I’m all for using technology, my smart phone is a great tool, but to totally engage with technology while disengaging with those who are physically present with you is relationally damaging. I’m sure the couples intent was to go to dinner and spend time with one another developing their relationship. Without engaging one another, they may have well simply gone to dinner alone and texted one another.

“Don’t just pretend to love others. Really love them…Love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honoring each other…” (Romans 12:9-10, 13 NLT)

Be Purposeful With Your Time

Closing the gap between intentions and actions requires that you use your time wisely, that you are on purpose. It’s simple, if you think something good, say it. When you think of something to do for others, do it. And if you want something different, be it. This is the principle that God set in motion called sowing and reaping. It is the best way to be purposeful with your time and add value to those you have relationships with.

“Therefore, whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone…”  (Galations 6:11, NLT)

The best thing you can do today to add value to others relationally is to close the gap between your intentions and your actions. This one thing will change every relationship you have for the better. Make a commitment today to begin judging yourself by your actions rather than your intentions.
