How To Harness Your Fear

fearBeing alive means you deal with fears. While dealing with fear is not an option, how you deal with it is. You have choices; you can choose to simply avoid it. In this case, you would pretty much need to avoid all of life. This won’t work. You can hope it goes away on its own. It won’t, it will haunt you until you choose the right way to deal with it: face it and overcome it.

When you face and overcome your fear, you will feel empowered. Fear wants to steal your peace and stress and cause you to live with negative emotions. God knows and understands. That is why throughout scripture we are told again and again to “fear not”.  Fear is not a part of God’s plan for your life as His masterpiece: “For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.”  (2 Timothy 1:7 NLT) Notice the provision you have been given in place of fear.

Power

As God’s masterpiece, you have been given strength of character when you face fear of any kind. Allow Him to replace fear with His power.

Love

Love is the most powerful emotion and feeling that we have available to us. Love will empower you to face the fears that you may face and ultimately help you to overcome them.

Self-discipline

In order to live life as the masterpiece you were created to be, you must have control or discipline over yourself and your fears. This is not the same as self-effort or self-strength. This is a gift that is given to you by your creator.

A Strategy

Knowing that you are given power, love and self-discipline, rather than fear, here is a strategy to implement these 3 gifts so that you can harness and overcome the fears that come your way. Prayerfully confess the fear to God and ask Him to fill you with His power, His love and with self-discipline. Ask Him for wisdom on what action you should take to move forward and face your fear and ultimately overcome it. If fear persists, you may want to get a friend or loved one involved by asking them to join you on this journey to pray with you and encourage you. Find someone who loves you and wants to see you succeed and someone who has already faced and overcome the fear is even better!
