How To Deal With Disappointment Successfully

disappointmentI’ve had many disappointments in life. I suppose I could avoid them by not having hopes or expectations, but what kind of life would that be? Most likely dreary, unproductive and at its best drudgery. That is not how we are intended to live. In fact you are created to live as a masterpiece! (Ephesians 2:10) Jesus gives us a word picture of what masterpiece living looks like in John 10:10: “a rich and satisfying life”.

Unfortunately, like me, most of you have experienced disappoinment in life at one time or another. It’s part of life. The key is not to avoid disappointment but rather to deal with it successfully. The question is how?

1. Don’t Make It Personal

Disappointment is often connected to failure, failure to meet a goal or reach an objective. However, failure and disappointment are a thing, not a person. Don’t think in terms of “I’m a failure” or “I’m a disappointment”. There are things you may fail at that really disappoint you, but that doesn’t make you a failure, it just means welcome to the human race. Even though you fail at something, you are still created as a masterpiece.

2. Make It A Learning Experience

Every time you face a setback, a failure or a disappointment, you are facing an opportunity to learn and grow, don’t let it pass you by. Don’t waste the experience, if you do, you are destined to repeat it. Look at every disappointment from a perspective of personal growth. What can you learn? What would you do different if given a similar opportunity in the future?

3. Keep Hoping And Risking

If allowed, the disappointments of yesterday will dominate and stifle your future. With each day comes new opportunity and new hope. Regardless of what disappointment you may face, a sudden break could come at any moment that will turn your life around!

“Unrelenting disappointment leaves you heartsick, but a sudden good break can turn life around.” (Proverbs 13:12 THE MESSAGE)
