As long as I can remember, I’ve always been fascinated with eagles. They are powerful, majestic and inspiring. In my early twenties I had an especially close encounter with one while making the drive from Colorado Springs to the four corners area of Colorado. I had the sunroof off the top of the car, enjoying every minute of the mountain air and surroundings. I was crossing Wolfcreek pass as I came around a sharp curve in the road I was only a few yards from an eagle that had landed in the middle of my lane. There was no room for dodging this beautiful bird without going over the steep edge of the mountain. I did the only thing I knew to do, I slammed on my brakes and hoped for the best.
The eagle spread its wings and took flight. It was scary and awesome all at the same time. As I was trying to brake to a stop, the eagle rose above my car and I slide right under it. It’s talons scratched my car between the top of the windshield and the open sunroof. As I went under its spread wings, it’s wingspan was wider than my car. I took a deep breath and continued over the pass and the eagle flew off as though nothing had happened.
Eagles Don’t Just Fly, They Soar
To say that the eagle “flew off” is to really understate how eagles take flight, because eagles don’t fly like other birds do. While an eagle does flap its wings occasionally, for the most part, it rides the wind and eagles soar. Soaring is different from flying. Soaring is riding the thermals effortlessly, higher and higher. Eagles have an innate ability to sense the wind current, they wait until the wind is just right, then it spreads its wings and lets the current take it to the heights.
A Picture Of Your Life
The soaring eagle teaches us great lessons about our own lives, just like the eagle, you were made to soar: “But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles…” (Isaiah 40:31 NLT) These words found in scripture are pointing toward the life that God has in mind for you, today. I write often about how God created you as His masterpiece. “Soaring high on wings like eagles” is a picture of living life as the masterpiece you were created to be. While it may be a different life than you are currently experiencing, know that it is the life you are created to live. You were made to soar.
